I create bold, engaging illustrations that help scientists make their research more visible, distinctive and inspiring to a wider audience

These are bespoke and detailed artworks for scientists and labs. A way for you to show your research in a genuinely unique and memorable way. For use on your website, in your presentations and beyond

I’m Sam Falconer, an artist and illustrator specialising in science, health and complex ideas. I’ve spent over a decade turning science in to distinctive visuals for clients including Science, Nature, Scientific American, New Scientist, Merck and Bristol Myers Squibb. My passion lies in making art that celebrates scientists, innovation and human progress

What I offer

Lab Concept Artwork

A bespoke illustration that brings together the central themes and methods of your research in a single conceptual artwork

Designed to act as a visual centrepiece for your lab’s communications, from your website and presentations to conferences, recruitment, announcements and public outreach

I also include one archival quality giclée print of the final piece for your lab or office wall

Who is it for?

This is for scientists and research groups who want something much more memorable than a standard figure or website graphic. It is a unique combination of art and science made specifically by me to celebrate your research and bring it to life visually

The Process

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines.

    Ideas

We talk about what you’d like to show in the piece and your usage requirements. I then get to work on creating at least 3 initial concepts

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and half circle lines.

    Feedback

You pick a direction and feedback on any changes you’d like to make before I get to work on further development. Two rounds of edits are included at this stage if needed

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and circle lines.

    Delivery

I deliver the finalised illustration, and you let me know if there are any amendments you’d like to make. These might include colour tweaks or the repositioning of specific elements

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines.

    Completion

Once you are happy with the result, I send over the final digital files and arrange your art print to be delivered to your desired specifications

Why work with me?

Your research is incredible but may not have the visual presentation that it deserves. I aim for my work to be uniquely placed to solve that problem.

My work sits in a rare space between contemporary illustration and representative science illustration. Bold and engaging but also informed and interesting to the curious viewer.

From over a decade working as an artist and illustrator I’ve developed a unique visual style and way of communicating science that’s been recognised by leading science journals and popular science outlets, research institutes, book publishers and pharmaceutical companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes absolutely. Every commission is different and the Art Lab Concept is intended as a clear example but just a starting possibility. Additional options could include more conceptual imagery, portrait illustrations, smaller spot or figure-like illustrations, journal cover proposals, larger pieces for lab decor and so on. You might find inspiration in my broader portfolio.

  • Use by the commissioning scientist or lab is included in the standard license. Wider institutional use by a university, department, institute, press office, publisher, funder or company will require an additional license, depending on the context.

  • I draw and paint the final pieces digitally, preparatory sketches are either hand drawn or sketched digitally.

  • No. Copyright remains with the artist unless separately assigned in writing for an additional fee. The commission includes ownership of any physical print and a license to use the digital artwork for the agreed purposes outlined in the Commissioner Agreement.

  • Yes, selectively. My main focus is conceptual art and illustration roughly in line with my portfolio. I can potentially create graphical abstracts or similar visuals on a case by case basis.

  • I’m based in the UK.

  • This solution is for people who want bespoke, detailed illustrations authored by me through the lens of my unique experience and taste. Whilst current AI is amazing, in the visual field it has many failings that are particularly relevant to this type of imagery. Complex, multifaceted artworks where specific elements need to cohere in finely tuned ways to a specific brief.

  • It may be especially useful if you are:

    Launching a new lab
    Updating a lab website
    Recruiting students, postdocs or collaborators
Presenting complex research to a broader audience
Marking a major publication, prize or grant
Looking for a distinctive image for talks, profiles or outreach
Wanting a physical artwork to display in your lab that represents your research in a unique way

  • A single Lab Concept Artwork project will take around 3-6 weeks, depending on factors like speed of feedback and image complexity.

  • Yes, up to two rounds of feedback are included at the Ideas stage and up to two further rounds at the Delivery stage. Once the illustration is at Delivery stage the amendments must be cosmetic and not structural, at the Ideas stage changes can be larger scale. Additional rounds of feedback are possible but will be invoiced additionally depending on their complexity.

  • This is an archival quality giclée art print on 308 gsm Hahnemühle Photorag paper, printed by specialist fine art printers. A single print up to a maximum of 84cm on it’s longest side is included in a standard Art Lab Concept project fee.
