Why work with me?
My work sits in a unique niche between contemporary illustration and representative science illustration, bold and engaging but also informed and interesting to the knowledgeable viewer.
Being a commercial illustrator is largely about developing a unique visual style and way of creating imagery that engages the viewer whilst also communicating a concept. By working with scientists directly I’m able to offer this value to you. I believe I am uniquely placed in this regard, and I get to benefit by spending my time on meaningful projects that I enjoy!
How much does it cost?
Lab Concept Artwork projects start at $6000
This includes concept development, a defined sketch and revision process, final artwork digital files, usage rights for the lab or individual scientist, and an archival quality print for your lab or office.
Larger projects, additional artworks, wider institutional use or commercial licensing are quoted separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes absolutely. Every commission is different. Additional options could include more conceptual imagery, portrait illustrations, smaller spot or figure-like illustrations, journal cover proposals, larger pieces for lab decor and so on. You might find inspiration in my broader portfolio.
-
Use by the commissioning scientist or lab is included in the standard license. Wider institutional use by a university, department, institute, press office, publisher, funder or company will require an additional license, depending on the context.
-
I draw and paint the final pieces digitally, preparatory sketches are either hand drawn or sketched digitally.
-
No. Copyright remains with the artist unless separately assigned in writing for an additional fee. The commission includes ownership of any physical print and a license to use the digital artwork for the agreed purposes.
-
Yes, selectively. My main focus is conceptual, artwork-led imagery rather than routine technical figure production, but I can create journal-cover-style images, graphical abstracts or presentation visuals on a case by case basis.
-
I’m based in the UK but work internationally.
-
This solution is for people who want bespoke, detailed illustrations authored by me through the lens of my unique experience and taste. Whilst AI is amazing, in the visual field it has many failings that are particularly relevant to this type of imagery. Complex, multifaceted artworks where specific elements need to cohere together in finely tuned ways to a specific brief.
-
It may be especially useful if you are:
Launching a new lab
Updating a lab website
Recruiting students, postdocs or collaborators
Presenting complex research to a broader audience
Marking a major publication, prize or grant
Looking for a distinctive image for talks, profiles or outreach
Wanting a physical artwork to display in your lab that represents your research in a unique way -
A single lab concept artwork project will take around 3-6 weeks, depending on factors like speed of feedback and image complexity.
